Day 16

You see a little white vase and think, that will be easy to paint. Well, it's not. What is it about white? Geez Rache, do I have a lot to learn.

Day15

More apples. Different color. I wanted to play with using primarily one color and keeping it dominantly warm or cool. As you can see, this came out on the warm side. What did you paint, Rach?

Day 15

So, Jayne, driving home from my mother's house I stopped and did a sketch of this scene, thinking it could be a quick snowy painting. But no, it wasn't quick. Well, I was distracted, too. I'm determined to paint this snow, though.

Day 14

More apples. Got back home today from Atlanta and I'm sorry to say I didn't paint while I was down there, Rach. Too crazy! The good news is I was only home an hour before everyone left and I was alone to paint. . . not a lot, but at least I got these two quick sketches done.

Day 11 & 12

I am growing tired of fruit, and these boots needed to do something besides trek through all this snow. The lemon and pear are Wednesday's and boots were yesterday. Today's painting is just getting started! Oh Jayne, I hope you're painting!

Day 10

Tuesday night painting group, Jayne did some nice peppers and then washed them off the canvas, silly girl. I painted these brushes of hers even though she kept stealing from the still life. C-R-A-Z-Y !

My days 7 & 8

5x5 oil on canvas
3x3 oil on paper
6x6 oil on canvas
Hi Rachie - As you probably figured out, I couldn't post from where I was - no internet connection. Can you believe it? I did manage to paint some each day, but I couldn't paint a view from the window. The snow on the back deck was chest high and blocking most of view. I tried a still life - the light was changing so quickly it was hard get the shadows and highlights down (as you can see). I also did some small, really quick value studies using 3 colors. They were tiny, but so helpful to do. I really like this one and it took no more than 10-15 minutes. Sometimes when you just don't care about the outcome, you produce something you like. The last one is from a photograph - I don't really like the foreground (the water w/the trees reflecting in it) but am at a loss as to what to do. For now, I'm just leaving it.

Day 8

Jayne I fought a little with this one, but am gonna post it anyway. It's a view from my mother's yard, where I spent the day yesterday. I tried not to get to bogged down wit detail but did not have great success. I think you must be painting at Sugarloaf, but not posting.

Day 7

Oh Jayne, I Went down to the point today and did a quick sketch of the snow on the rocks. It was so cold I could barely stand it, but I roughed this out then came home and did it. Can't wait to see a painting from the loaf.

Day 6

Fifteen minute lemons! Blame it on my dinner date--if I had a little more time, ummmmmm, well, no, it probably WOULDN'T be better, but fast is fun, I think. Didja paint today, Jayne? [Now they are 30 minute lemons]

Rach - those are beautiful! I love the detail in the dish. Hey - fifteen minutes is so much better than nothing at all! The point is, that we're doing this. I can't remember the last time I painted two, let alone four days in a row - who cares if it was a tiny canvas or just fifteen minutes. I'm feeling so much better just doing this - I'm looking at it as practice. Like today I really thought about painting the shapes that I saw (I know, I still got caught up in some detail, trying to paint what I knew it was instead of just painting the shapes). I did the pears this morning and had time this afternoon to whip off the apples. They were done on a board I had that was primed in blue. It was really interesting painting on a blue ground. . . anyway, it's not done by any means, but it's done for now. Off to the art store.

Day Five

Hi Rachel - Another attempt at pears. . . wow, these are bad. No depth at all, they're just floating!

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Day Four

Hey Rachie - Took a break from the fruit and veggies to do a quick landscape from a photo I took late this fall at Ram Island. Still trying to get rid of the graphic designer in me and not get caught up in the details. . . not quite there yet!

Good job Jayne! Ok well, I back-tracked and did some pears!! I know what you mean about the details, uggh--this is hard!

Day Three

Frame Shop paint night. Rachel, Melissa, Kevin and I met to paint peppers. Green and red, but Kevin only painted one red pepper, a big one at that. It was a lot of fun and we're all excited to keep doing this. The lighting is way off with these pictures. I'll have to re-shoot them tomorrow. Mine is the top one.

Day Two

Rache - I did it. Day two, done. Don't really love it but feel good that I did it. I wish it was more "painterly" - you know what I mean. It might be back to just using the palette knife for me. . .

Day One - The Start

Rachlel's PaintingsJayne's Paintings

Jayne and Rachel painted today right after the caucus. Well, after Rachel caucused. We painted at Jayne's house, two paintings a piece: a still life and then Jayne painted from a photo and Rachel painted the scene out the window, a snowy day. We worked hard and aren't that happy with the results, but are satisfied with the process. At least we started. We will do this once at least a week, won't we Jayne...watch for our posts. Go Hillary!
