20 minute lemon • 30 minute apples

Rache, This is the one painting I did during the past two weeks, sad but true.

Jayne I had to go to school so I quit on these--I want to finish up, but that will have to wait.

March 30

Sunday morning, Jayne, at my mother's house again. I thought I would leave fruit and venture into flowerdom...it was a struggle.

March 29

Grape tomatoes today Jayne. Burr says they look like strawberries, kinda, but I had fun with them.

March 27

Jaynie girl, I'm a fruit. I am becoming a fruit. There is nothing but fruit. I still have some shadows to finish on this one, but wanted to post while there is some light to shoot. WIll you please paint fruit with me this weekend? We can be fruity together.

March 26, 2008

I started out with a sketch of the bowl of edemame shells, but gave up on it pretty quick, resorting to what I considered a safe bet: banana, apple. Jayne, are you not posting?

Tuesday night painting...Jayne, here are those apples, I want you to post that sweet pear, please?

Day 35

To me, this looks as cold as it feels outside. I don't know about you Rache, I'm ready for warmer weather.
I know Jayne, I HATE this weather, which is why I painted inside. Where is your image from?

Day 34

Not a great day for painting. Did another small landscape, experimenting with a different style. Hate it!! Won't try that again. And the apples. . . well, they're just apples. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better paint day. Are you around Rache? The boys are at Sugarloaf so if you want to paint. . .

Hey Jayne, I'm just starting a painting, after a day of catch up lesson planning and grading. It's the proverbial empty tube of paint...

Day 33

Tiny little 3x5 painting today, Rache. Might go do some more, but in case I don't get back up there, I wanted to get this done. Plus, I wanted to work quickly. I'm realizing that sometimes, the more slowly I work, the less I like it.

Yah, me too. I love your landscapes, and wish I would do them, but am waiting for weather. I also want to go to that PSA oil sketching workshop. have you read about it? Here are the strawberries I did this morning.

Day 32

I did this yesterday but it was too late to post - I was way too tired. I didn't get the oils out today but did play with some water color - now that's a challenge after using oils. Did you paint today, Rache?

Yes, I painted, it's my snack. Blue Cheese dressing and baby carrots. Boy did I select a trying subject.

Day 30

Here are my radishes, where are yours Rachel?!? I really want to see yours again, they're so nice.
Here they are! Better late than never, eh?

Day 28

Hi Rache. This is what I did up at Sugaloaf. As I look at it now, I see what I want to change. Funny how you can see things later. I hope the paint is still wet enough. . . we'll see if you can guess what I'm going to change.

Day 31

It's a mistake to paint at night--the photo is dark, but I'll take another tomorrow to replace it. JAYNE remember when there was all that crud on your canvas that night at the shop? Well, I had that problem tonight, and I figured it out...it's old paint! We are just being too frugal, trying to use up yesterday's paint instead of washing the palette and squirting out new stuff. Anyway, it's pears, yet again, but I'm experimenting with letting some of the undercoat show through and I think I like it.

Day 27

I know this is out of order, but I couldn't figure out how to put it where it belonged - on Day 27. Just testing out a different style. This is from a photo Taylor took while she was in Peru. Rache, I'm off to Sugarloaf for the weekend so no posting, but I'm bringing my paints. Hope you're having a wonderful time with Daddy, make sure to give him my best! Til Monday. . .

Day 29

Grapes, Jayne, because I just need to keep working on staying away from details, and round objects help me do that, where I can move simply from light to dark. see you tonight?
This is probably the biggest apple painting I've done. It's strange painted so much bigger - 10x10 instead of the tiny 5 or 6 inch squares. I'm working up to the big canvas Rach - remember we talked about that?

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Day 26

Family paint day. I know I haven't posted in a few days, but I have been painting! I even got Taylor and Reese to join in the fun. Actually, they have both joined me for two days - willingly, I might add. Can you tell who did what?

Day 25

On this vacation day I ran out of cadmium yellow light, disastrous in a small town like Dripping Springs. That means a trip to Austin is in order for tomorrow. Jayne, it's the first time I've cut the fruit open and what a challenge this is for me, phew! I really struggled with the translucency. I may have to try this again and again. Um, Jayne, are you there?
What's wrong with this picture? I like my quick rough sketch much better than the actual painting. Dang it.

Friday, March 7, 2008

Day 23

Rache, I know you don't consider images created on the computer art, but this is my art for today. It was a commissioned piece, you could say. . . for Jim, for a client of his. I did get my hands messy with some real oils but not enough to show you. I plan to spend a lot of time painting tomorrow - the boys are heading up north, so if you feel inclined. . .

Finally posted the apple and glass, I am not happy with the lack of symmetry in the glass, but am having fun with reflections.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Day 20

Painting at the Frame Shop. Yellow apples - hard to believe we were looking at the same thing. Mine is the top one, Rachel's the other. Maybe it was the wine? Thanks, Kevin. . .

Monday, March 3, 2008

Day 19

Geez, Rache. I liked this when I was doing it but now that's it here, I'm not sure I do. Maybe because it looks better the actual size - it's bigger than what I've been doing - maybe 11x17. What do you think. . .

Day 19

Jayne, I am going to keep trying to paint winter, but had to revert to fruit thinking I would paint something quick. Then, of course, the addition of a glass threw me off, but I like what I'm learning about glass. I found a good book about value studies, and REALLY want to work with it. Do you think Jennifer will come tomorrow night? I have questions for her.

Day 17

Yes Jayne, I am painting, and I know exactly what you mean about values..as you can see, I am struggling with that too. Let's plan to collect all the research we can about value studies and do one on Tuesday. This picture is the estuary at Morse Mountain, where I spent the night last night.

Hi Rachel, I hope M.R. is feeling better and you're back to painting soon. Here, two of the three boys are gone so I had some time to paint today. What a treat. Keeping it loose I wanted to work on values (something I was reading about his morning). They didn't quite come out as I expected but I did learn from doing them. It's so much harder than it appears. Call me if you want to paint tomorrow.
